BRAY: The Story
Bray began in the heart of a home kitchen during the pandemic of 2020, when founder Jonathan Lim started baking sourdough — not for fame, but for family, neighbors, and a sense of comfort in uncertain times. What started as a small act of care grew into something much bigger.
Jonathan wasn’t chasing perfection. He was solving a problem.
Artisanal bread was often too hard, too sour, and too “atas” for the everyday Malaysian. So he crafted a solution: Malaysian-adapted sourdough — featuring a soft crumb, thin crust, with just the right tang — bread that could be enjoyed around every family table, by both kids and elders alike.
As word spread, demand soared. Bray evolved from a humble home operation into a full-fledged bakery, rooted in one core mission: to bring better bread to Malaysian households. But our journey wasn’t without trials.
In 2022, Bray faced a major setback — a broken partnership and a mountain of debt. It was a tough season that taught us a hard truth: Passion alone isn’t enough — people want value. But in the struggle, we found something more valuable: purpose.
Jonathan chose transparency over pride. When times were tough, everyone knew. That openness became the glue holding the team together. Failure wasn’t hidden — it became part of our mission. We rebuilt Bray not just as a bakery, but as a second chance — for ourselves, and for others.
Today, Bray is powered by people — bakers, servers, creators, even former failed business owners — many without formal F&B backgrounds. But all of us were given a chance: to grow, to serve, and to create something meaningful. Our culture was forged not in comfort, but in crisis — built on conviction, grit, and grace.
